Lands and Membership

Dokis First Nation is a progressive community focused on building a healthy and thriving economy. The Lands Department works to promote and protect Dokis First Nation’s lands and resources. The department provides advice and support to the leadership and various departments and also work in conjunction with other service providers to offer comprehensive services. Some of the services the Lands Department assists with include:

  • Lands Transactions – 911 allotments
  • Housing Needs
  • Leasing – no leased land available.
  • Surveys
  • Species at Risk
  • Environmental Management
  • Forestry & Trail Planning
  • Land Use Planning
  • And more….

Finally, the Membership Section includes information on how to update your address, provide information on Estates, while the Member Portal provides information on Gas Cards and how to apply/renew your Secure Status Cards.

Housing Needs

We all want to live in our own homes as long as possible. As we grow older, that often means making adaptations to our homes to better accommodate our changing abilities. The Housing Department provides the following programs and services to assist the On-reserve members with their housing needs:

Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP Grant) – Through the programs offered from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), funding has been received for major repairs to improve the health and safety of on-reserve affordable housing.

Through our Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) On-Reserve, we help First Nations cover the costs of major repairs to substandard homes. The eligibility is based on the occupants’ total household income; it must be at or below the established limit based on the location of the community.

Home Adaptations for Seniors’ Independence On-Reserve Program (HASI) – Funding to help on-reserve seniors adapt their homes so they can keep living independently and extend the time on-reserve seniors are able to live independently in their homes.

This program is open to senior members who are sixty years of age and over. This is a grant to a maximum of $20,000.00 to make necessary repairs or upgrades to their home.

Emergency Repair Program (ERP) – Funding to help low-income on-reserve households make emergency home repairs.

Through our Emergency Repair Program (ERP) On-Reserve, we provide financial support to help low-income on-reserve households make the repairs they need.

A First Nation or First Nation member living on reserve may apply for financial support. However, the household income must be at or below the established limit which is based on the location of the community.

Apartment Rental Units

The Housing Department manages 19 houses and 11 apartment/rental units,

We completed many projects this year to upgrade the rental units and have more projects planned over the coming years. There is an upcoming project for summer 2023 – a 7-Rapid Home Initiative.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

A geographic information system (GIS) is one of the methods used to gather, store, analyze and map all types of special data. Having a mapping program in place is also useful for consulting with industry and government, and management of our traditional territories, formal land claims processes, traditional knowledge mapping, and manage resources on traditional lands. It’s benefits include better management and decision making for community planning in Dokis and Inter-departmentally for project planning.
